    Internship and Residency Program

    Internship Program

American Health Care partners with local universities to provide “hands on” experience to pharmacy students considering a career in the area of managed care.  As part of the Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences [APPEs], students learn the importance of managed care principles and how they impact the healthcare system.  Under clinical pharmacist supervision, students

    • Gain practical knowledge of prescription drug benefit design, formulary management, outcomes research, and pharmacoeconomics.
    • Complete projects supporting clinical pharmacy operations which include, at a minimum, one formal presentation.

    Residency Program
American Health Care offers a postgraduate year one [PGY1] pharmacy residency in managed care, accredited by the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists and the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy [ASHP/AMCP].  Through a series of core/required learning experiences [e.g., population health management, pharmacy operations, formulary management, drug use evaluation, pharmacy networks, and prior authorizations] residents have the following opportunities:

    • Further develop their clinical and presentation skills through pharmacy and therapeutics [P&T] committee participation and one-on-one physician correspondence
    • Develop and implement evidence-based disease management protocols and guidelines to ensure safe and effective medication use for patients
    • Actively participate in clinical studies
    • Serve as preceptors to Advance Pharmacy Practice Experience [APPE] students

It is a requirement to complete at least one formal project for presentation at the Western States Conference and other possible forums.  Following successful program completion, residents will be prepared for specific positions in benefits management, formulary management, utilization review, clinical program management, and care management.
